GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity girls volleyball team started its week at home hosting Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Sept. 13. Gowanda came out flat in game one and soon found themselves down 13-6. At that point, they got their game on track and were able to tighten the game to 14-12. CLV scored twice before Gowanda took over the lead 18-16 with a six-point run. That grew to 21-17 before CLV rallied back to close to within one at 24-23. From that critical point, Gowanda held on to secure a 25-23 win and go up 1-0 in the match.
CLV was able to start out game two with a 3-1 early advantage that Gowanda quickly reduced to a tie. From a 4-4 tie, Gowanda began to slowly pull into the lead that eventually reached 17-7. CLV closed the gap to 7 points, but even play from there brought Gowanda a 25-18 win.
Up 2-0 in the match, Gowanda was able to let a couple of the starters sit out game three. They still came out fast scoring the first four points. C-LV came back to tie the game at 5. The tight play saw the score tied through 11 before Gowanda was able to gradually move out to a 19-12 lead. Very even play from that point allowed Gowanda to hold on for a 25-20 win to take the match 3-0.
The volleyball team was at home again Sept. 15 hosting Silver Creek. Gowanda started out slow in game one, falling into a 12-5 hole. They finally regained the lead at 17-16 and fought on to close 26-24 win. They went up 2-0 in the match with a game two 25-20 win. Silver Creek came back in game three with an early 7-1 advantage. They held the lead all game fighting off a Gowanda come back for a 24-22 win to move the match score to 2-1. Gowanda answered with a strong effort in game four. Starting with a 4-0 lead, they led all the way to a 25-18 victory in the game for a 3-1 match win.

— On Sept. 18, the Gowanda Varsity football team took on Cassadaga Valley in a game played at Falconer. Cassadaga Valley quickly scored taking a 7-0 lead. A pass intercepted by Gowanda on the four-yard line in the last seconds of the half prevented a second Cassadaga Valley score. Late in the 3rd quarter, Gowanda lost a fumble on their own 15 to set up the second touchdown in the game. They were now down 14-0. Cassadaga Valley mounted one final scoring drive midway through the final quarter. Gowanda was unable to answer and the game ended with the scoreboard showing 21-0.

— The Pine Valley-Gowanda boys soccer team traveled to Randolph Sept. 14. Down 2-1 at halftime, they rallied in the second half for two goals to claim a 3-2 win. Scoring for Pine Valley-Gowanda were Wayne Libby, who scored the first goal in the game, along with Ryan Waterman and Darwin Westlund, providing the comeback goals.
On Sept. 16, the team hosted Portville with a much different result. Portville was up 4-1 before Darwin Westlund scored the lone Pine Valley-Gowanda goal. Portville added another three to take a 7-1 victory.

— On Sept. 13, the Pine-Valley-Gowanda girls soccer team hosted Randolph. Down 2-0 in the first half, Haleigha Hardy scored for the home team. Three additional second-half goals gave Randolph a 5-0 win.
The soccer team traveled to Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Sept. 15. After taking a 1-0 halftime lead, CLV added three in the second half for a 4-0 shutout.
Pine Valley-Gowanda closed out their week hosting Franklinville. While goals continued to be hard to come by for Pine-Valley Gowanda, a single Franklinville goal late in the first half would give them the eventual 1-0 win.

— The Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association opened the fall cross country season on Sept. 14. The Gowanda Varsity boys and girls teams hosted an opening day meet at the Collins Conservation Club. In attendance was a team from Randolph as well as a few runners representing Dunkirk High School. Gowanda took first place with runners finishing 2, 3, 4, 5 and 11, for a total of 25. Randolph was 2nd with 31 points. Dunkirk had only three runners and did not figure into the scoring. Top runners for the Gowanda boys were Drew Schull (2nd, 18:24), Jayson Twoguns (3rd, 19:53), Cole Herman (4th, 20:52) and Aaron North (5th, 21:05).
For the girls, Gowanda finished in second place with a score of 28. They were edged out by Randolph with 27 points. Again, Dunkirk did not figure in the scoring with only one runner. Gowanda’s top girls were Calie Hudson (2nd, 22:05), Autumn Pupo (4th, 24:28), Kailyn Farner (5th, 25:13), Miranda Kaminski (7th, 27:24) and Sydney Smith (10th, 29:20).
The cross country teams were also represented at the Red Dragon Invitational hosted by Maple Grove on Sept. 17 where 17 schools were represented. In a group of 93 boys, Gowanda came away with two runners in the top 25, Drew Schull (23rd, 19:08.47) and Chase Bowlen (25th, 19:21.70). Top 25 Gowanda girls included Autumn Pupo (10th, 22:09.26) and Calie Hudson (22nd, 23:33.91).

— The Gowanda-Pine Valley girls swimming team traveled to Chautauqua Lake Sept. 14. The young team, composed of just two juniors and a group of five freshmen and seventh grader, had a respectable showing. While the hosts finished with 78 points, Gowanda was close behind with 52, including four first- and four second-place finishes. Top Gowanda swimmers were Molly Sunick (1st, 200Y Individual Medley, 3:01.03; 1st, 100Y Freestyle, 1:10.47), Sophia Jones (1st, 50Y Freestyle, 31.12; 2nd, 100Y Breaststroke, 1:41.20), Kendra Schultz (1st, 200Y Freestyle, 2:48.30; 3rd, 100 Breaststroke, 1:48.31), Nataliee Vecchio (2nd, 100Backstroke, 1:41.97) and Danielle Krajewski (3rd, 100Y Freestyle, 1:32.21; 4th, 100Y, Breaststroke 2:05.36). The Gowanda relay team of Schultz, Sunick, Jones and Krajewski also earned two second-place finishes (200Y Medley Relay, 2:41.17; 200Y Freestyle Relay, 2:18.82). Bell Kerr and Carlie Ward also posted impressive times swimming in exhibition.
