FREDONIA, NY – Sheila Starkey Hahn, an immigration attorney with offices in Fredonia and Buffalo, NY, was named 2022 “Lawyer of the Year” in Western New York for the practice of immigration law by Best Lawyers and US News & World Report. Her firm was also recognized as a “Best Law Firm” in the field of immigration law for the sixth consecutive year.
 
Starkey Hahn was the only immigration attorney in Western New York named “Lawyer of the Year,” selected by a vote of immigration attorneys nationwide. She was highlighted in a recent issue of Buffalo Business First for this achievement, which featured the most highly-respected attorneys, as selected by their peers across the region. Best Lawyers lists attorneys in 148 specialties, representing all 50 states, who have been chosen through an exhaustive survey in which thousands of the nation’s top lawyers confidentially evaluate their peers.
 
Starkey Hahn has had a successful solo immigration practice for over 20 years, with offices now in Fredonia and Buffalo, representing companies and individuals in both immigrant and nonimmigrant visa matters. She is the immediate past chair of the National Pro Bono Committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and currently serves as Vice Chair of the AILA Client Resources Committee. Starkey Hahn lectures on topics of immigration law at universities, embassies, international organizations and conferences, and is the author of numerous articles on immigration law.
 
Starkey Hahn was the recipient of the 2018 AILA Michael Maggio Pro Bono Award for her work at detention centers on the Southern border providing legal representation to women and children fleeing persecution in Central America.
 
Starkey Hahn grew up in Snyder, NY, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Buffalo with a double major in English Literature and Spanish and received her JD degree from the University of Minnesota Law School with honors.
 
Starkey Hahn lives in the village of Fredonia with her husband and two sons. She is a member of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Rotary Club, a newly-elected member of the Fredonia Board of Education and serves as Vice Chair of the Board of the 1891 Fredonia Opera House.
